Staying at the Kosta Hostel on Bali
I found Kosta Hostel through Instagram. It should be no surprise that the beautiful teal blues that outline the doors and windows stopped me mid-scroll and led me down a rabbit hole to their website. What is this place!? It's a hostel?! I'd like to think a space, just like a person, can be really beautiful, but if there is no personality behind that beauty then I'm out. There's a lot of love and a big personality in the bones of the Kosta Hostel.
Kosta Hostel opened only this year (2017) in June. All that beautiful wood that you see that makes up the doors, windows, and walls of the Kosta Hostel well that was once owner's/husband and wife team Tipi and Feby's home. While it was a home part of it also became a popular bar. Let's back up though, how does someones house become a bar then become one of the most beautiful hostels?
When Feby and Tipi built their house they would invite a couple friends over for drinks. One friend invited another friend and pretty soon the evenings grew. When even more people started coming they toyed with the idea of turning a portion of their home into a bar. So that's what they did. You know those people you meet, that have an infectious smile and bring warmth into any room they're in? That's Feby, she lights up the room she comes into and makes you want to be her best friend. So naturally, their bar did very well. When it came time for that chapter to close they used the wood from this home and some from Java and built the Kosta Hostel.
We were too early arriving from Lombok to check in right away so we rent a scooter from the front desk (75,000 RPH) and locked our luggage in their lockers. Kosta is only 2 kms away from the main drag of Seminyak which is home to Instagram famous spots like The Kynd Cafe, Sea Circus, Taco Casa, Motel Mexicola, and Mad Pops.
Plus It's a Hostel! You'll Meet People Too
Our room ends up being on the second floor, when you walk out of our room there's a long walk way that looks out over a palm tree covered pool. Guests are laying on loungers, reading or telling each other stories about their travels. It rained that night and we end up taking shelter in our room. Even though it was raining it was still very humid so thank god for the AC unit we had so that we could sleep without waking up in a hot sweat.
All in all Kosta Hostel should be a must stay on your first or next trip to Bali! Drop me a comment below if you've already been!
There's a new hostel on the block and she's one you're going to want to become friends with and maybe even take it to the next level.
The rooms are clean, very clean. You don't feel like you're staying in a hostel with rooms this clean. Our room had three beds, one single and one bunkbed. Off of our room was an open-air bathroom and it was massive. When I walked in I said to my sister "you have got to see how big this bathroom is!". The walls which stretched at least 18 feet high are polished concrete and everything feels as if you have dropped into a Pinterest board.
The Good Mantra Cafe
Now I'm not a food snob by any means, but I do cook a ton at home and cooking has always been a passion of mine. So when I find spots with delicious menus I want to share them with everyone!
I'm not sure how they've managed, but not only is this place f*cking gorgeous, the food is messed up good too! Their menu was created by a family friend from Texas and because of this, the menu has a Southern flair to it that you won't find anywhere else in Bali. If you don't plan on staying you can always come for breakfast, dinner, coffee or a drink in the evening.
